Narrative inquiry is a research methodology that pays particular attention to the stories told
about life experiences. Narrative inquiry methods aim to collect stories from research
participants and they also involve researchers constructing stories based on the data
collected. These two activities – collecting and constructing stories – are central to the
narrative inquiry process. This book, edited by narrative inquiry scholar and advocate Dr. Nur Arifah Drajati,
illustrates many examples of narrative inquiry in action. The chapters present analyses and reflections of
life as teachers, researchers and practitioners. The focus, as it should be, is on experience. And more
importantly, it is on understanding and learning about those experiences. I have called this process
narrative knowledging, or the meaning making that occurs during the different stages and among the
various participants while conducting narrative research, including writing about one’s research findings,
and reading the reports of research. So, while reading these chapters, you too will be involved in further
narrative knowledging; that is, learning about the life experiences of the authors who wrote the chapters.
And you are in for a wonderful time. The chapters are rich in detail and very instructive. You will learn a lot,
both about doing narrative inquiry and also about the important work of teacher education.
