Academic Writing is essential for students. However, how to learn and teach Academic Writing effectively needs to be further researched. Along with the rapid development of educational technology, teaching and learning for academic writing supported by technology also develops simultaneously. One of technologies adopted to support academic writing is artificial intelligence (AI) technology embedded in writing-assisted programs such as Project Essay Grade (PEG), Intelligent Essay Assessor by Pearson, Criterion by Educational Testing Service, My Access! by Vantage, Write & Improve by Cambridge English, Write to Learn by Pearson, Grammarly, Scribo by Literatu, and so on.
Despite the existence of many writing-assisted programs, questions such as “what should we do to use them effectively?” and “What problems may appears when using those applications?” may subsequently appear and attract teachers’ and students’ curiosity. Thus, by conducting researches supported by Universitas Sebelas Maret, Indonesia, and Marshall Cavendish Education (MCE), Singapore, and also by reviewing related literature, we explore how students and teachers in Indonesia employ AI in supporting learning and teaching academic writing. Accordingly, this book informs the concept of academic writing, how to teach it effectively using AI-based programs, the challenges potentially faced by students and teachers, and how to face those challenges. By the existing of this book, teachers and students may improve their insights on how they can use AI-based programs to support teaching and learning process.
